NEW BEDFORD, MA – A 23-year-old woman died, and one other person sustained serious injuries Friday in an auto-pedestrian crash in southeast Bristol County.
According to WPRI 12, the accident occurred at night on MA-18 near Hillman Street in New Bedford. This is just north of US-6 and west of Fish Island.
Police say the victim and her passenger exited their car when it became disabled on the highway. While they were standing near their vehicle, a second car hit them. The vehicle also struck a third car that had stopped nearby to render aid as wells as a police cruiser.
The driver of the disabled vehicle, identified as 23-year-old Ruby Quiro Santos, died after transport to an area hospital.
Medics airlifted the passenger of the disabled vehicle to the hospital with critical injuries.
A police officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
No charges have been announced so far.
A full investigation is underway.
