11 workers hospitalized after East Providence facility explosion

EAST PROVIDENCE, RI – Eleven workers were injured after an explosion and fire Wednesday night at an industrial site in East Providence, reports WPRI.

Officials arrived at the Aspen Aerogels facility on Dexter Road shortly after 8 p.m. in response to reports of a blast inside the property. Police say medics took the injured employees to a local hospital for treatment. There were no reports of any life-threatening harm.

The company produces insulation products used in electric vehicles. Fire Chief Michael Carey said the blast occurred during a production step that involved drying equipment similar to an oven.

State fire officials are still investigating what caused the incident and have closed the facility in the meantime.
