MIDDLETOWN, RI – A man is facing charges in connection with a deadly crash in Middletown early Thursday morning.
According to the Middletown Police Department, a vehicle was traveling south on West Main Road around 1:20 a.m. when it left the roadway, hit a stone wall and crashed into a utility pole near Linden Park. The vehicle went up in flames.
A rear-seat passenger, a child under the age of 3, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver and the front-seat passenger were seriously injured and transported to Rhode Island Hospital.
The driver, identified as Jerry Bonilla, 32, of the Bronx, New York, was later charged with multiple counts including driving under the influence of liquor or drugs, resulitng in death, and driving to endanger, resulting in death.
Police are continuing their investigation into the wreck.
