COVENTRY, RI – An allegedly impaired medical transport driver is accused of causing the death of a female patient in Coventry on November 27, according to WJAR.
Police say Dauda Elegushi, 25, was driving wheelchair-bound Lina Russo, 77, home from a dialysis appointment when he crashed head-on into another vehicle at Main St and Abbott’s Crossing Rd.
Investigators believe Russo’s wheelchair was not properly secured, causing her to be thrown about the vehicle. She was taken to a hospital in critical condition, where she later died.
Police say Elegushi was impaired and had an open Modelo beer bottle in his cup holder at the time of the collision.
Elegushi is currently free on a $20,000 bond. His employer, Assured Transportation, a subcontractor of Medical Transportation Management (MTM), has been ordered to stop operation immediately and their license has been suspended.
