PLAINVILLE, MA – Two people were involved in an electric vehicle rollover on Sunday along I-495 in Plainville, reports CBS Boston.
The crash happened at about 1:30 p.m. on the highwayās northbound lanes. The vehicle ended up on its side near the shoulder.
Several drivers stopped and tried to reach the occupants. Lt. David Iarussi, an Ashland firefighter who was off duty at the time, was among the good Samaritans to join in the rescue.
The rescue effort became urgent when smoke and flames appeared under the vehicle. A person nearby had an extinguisher and used it on the fire.
Bystanders then made several attempts to break into the vehicle. They used force and nearby objects to damage the glass.
Iarussi said the windshield created a major problem. It had cracks, but its laminated design still held together.
The group eventually found a way inside and removed both people before the fire could spread further.
Iarussi later credited the other witnesses with preventing a much worse outcome. He said their quick action and firefighting efforts likely saved lives.
Officials have not released the victimsā names or details concerning their medical conditions. Massachusetts State Police continue to investigate the crash.
