Pursuit, multi-auto wreck in Middletown ends in man’s arrest

MIDDLETOWN, RI – A 48-year-old man wanted by authorities had declined to stop for police, promoting a pursuit that ended in a multi-vehicle crash and his arrest Thursday.

The events unfolded around 11:30 a.m. when police said they were trying to pull over the man — Anthony Martin — on West Main Road, according to WPRI.

Martin immediately fled the scene and continued driving at dangerous high-speeds until he plowed into two vehicles. The first automobile he struck was on West Main, nearing Wossley, while the second was just before the Home Depot shopping plaza.

The speeding driver did not stop when he struck those, although the collision terminated when he eventually slammed into a pickup truck and then a fire hydrant and some street signs.

Police confirmed that the pickup truck driver was turning at the West Main Road and Browns Lane junction when they were hit. That driver, including the first two, were spared from physical harm, while Martin and the passenger with him, an unidentified woman, were hospitalized and sent to Newport Hospital for a medical evaluation.

Additional insight from officers indicated that Martin tried to flee but was immediately apprehended. Records also show that Rhode Island Police sought him out for assault and disorderly conduct charges, and he also has a past history of numerous outstanding warrants.

Officers have not released more information, including the specific pending charges. When new developments surface, then updates will be posted to this news blog.
