FOSTER, RI – Seven people, including four children, suffered injuries in a two-vehicle wreck Sunday morning at an intersection in Foster, reports NBC 10 News.
The collision occurred at the intersection of Route 101 and Route 94. Emergency crews took all seven victims to local hospitals after the crash.
Prior to the collision, police said, one vehicle with a single occupant was attempting to cross Hartford Pike. That vehicle then reportedly struck another car moving east on Route 101. The second vehicle was carrying six people, including four kids, at the time.
The impact sent the eastbound car off the road and onto the property of JP’s General Store. Store owner Paul Oueidat said he rushed out to help before first responders arrived.
Oueidat said he freed a woman after her vehicle door would not open and was forced to direct passing traffic around the scene.
Oueidat also says he has asked state officials for years to add a signal at that crossing near his business. The intersection currently has only stop signs and flashing warning lights.
A spokesperson for the Rhode Island Department of Transportation said 19 wrecks have been recorded at the intersection since 2020. That total does not include Sunday’s crash.
RIDOT said it has no present plan to put in a traffic signal. State officials noted that federal standards guide decisions on whether a signal can be installed.
Investigators have not filed any charges as they continue to review the crash.
