EAST PROVIDENCE, RI – Famous historian Gordon Wood lost his life as a result of a pedestrian-vehicle crash in East Providence on Sunday.
East Providence Police told GOLOCAL Prov that 92-year-old Wood was walking outside of Shaw’s on Taunton Avenue when he was struck by a vehicle. The driver stayed at the scene and is not expected to face charges.
First responders transported Wood to Rhode Island Hospital, where he later died.
Wood was a Providence local and was deemed one of America’s most accomplished scholars. In 1993, he won the Pulitzer Prize for History for his book The Radicalism of the American Revolution, and in 2010, won the National Humanities Medal.
Wood was also a professor at Alva O. Way University and Professor of History Emeritus at Brown University.
