CRANSTON, RI – Cranston police arrested a man on suspicion of DUI after an injury crash that sent several people to the hospital on Saturday.
Police told WJAR10News that the collision happened before 4 p.m. on Route 37. A 29-year-old man, identified as Enrique Alvarado, from Providence, was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed when he crashed into the back of a car, occupied by a family of five.
Alvarado allegedly tried to flee the scene on foot, but the driver of the struck car prevented him from doing so.
EMS crews transported Alvarado and the family of five to a hospital. One family member suffered a serious facial injury that required surgery, while four others sustained minor injuries. There, medical personnel took a blood sample from Alvarado.
Alvarado exhibited several signs of impairment and refused to engage in a chemical test at the scene.
Police took Alvarado into custody on suspicion of impairment and sought a court-authorized warrant to obtain the blood work in conjunction with their investigation.
