HOPKINTON, RI – One woman died, and three others suffered injuries Sunday afternoon in a head-on collision on Spring Street in Hopkinton, reports The Providence Journal.
Prior to the collision, Elisabeth Thayer, 88, was riding in a Jeep Cherokee driven by her daughter, Alexandrea Martino, 57.
The other vehicle, a Chevrolet Tahoe, was carrying two people. Police identified the Tahoe driver as Kevin Brown, 34, from Hope Valley. Brown’s passenger was a 35-year-old individual from Richmond.
Officials say the Jeep and the Tahoe were traveling in opposite directions before the crash. The vehicles then collided head-on around 2:34 p.m. on Spring Street. Investigators reported that everyone appeared to have been using seat belts and that airbags deployed in both vehicles.
Emergency crews took Martino to Rhode Island Hospital. Medical staff treated her for internal injuries, and she later left the hospital.
Brown also went to Rhode Island Hospital. He remained there as of Monday with injuries to his arm, hand, and ribs.
The passenger in the Tahoe went to Kent Hospital for evaluation and was later released.
Thayer did not survive the crash.
Authorities continue to examine what caused the collision. Police say they found no evidence that impairment played a role.
