WOONSOCKET, RI – Police confirmed Wednesday that a 4-year-old girl who was reported to have suffered injuries in a Monday morning pedestrian collision has since passed away.
This new piece of information was first announced by WJAR News Channel 10. To recap, the collision happened around 7 a.m., when the toddler, who was walking with her mother, was struck by a car on Hamlet Avenue.
EMS crews took the toddler to Hasbro Children’s Hospital and the mother to Rhode Island Hospital. The toddler was originally in critical condition and had gone on to suffer fatal injuries. The girl’s mother is recovering from serious wounds and was publicly identified as 32-year-old Dena Khan, a Woonsocket local.
The latest developments reveal that the driver, a 25-year-old man, may have been speeding when he struck Khan and her daughter. However, the city mayor still suspects the man, also a Woonoscket local, could have also hit a snowbank.
While an investigation continues, authorities revealed that the driver could expect to face criminal charges.
