Hit-and-run driver strikes, sends Coventry officer to hospital

COVENTRY, RI – A Coventry police officer was sent to Kent Hospital for treatment of unspecified wounds after he was struck by a 19-year-old man who fled the scene Tuesday.

The Coventry Police Department told Turnto10 that officers were going to the Coventry Bike Path near Lewis Farm Road to terminate a party there. Just as one of the officers was approaching the party attendees, one of the individuals, later identified as Ryland Roy, a Thompson resident, had purposefully struck the officer before fleeing the scene and heading to Connecticut, his home state.

Police arrested Roy on Wednesday. He will be charged with “felony assault with a dangerous weapon” and will likely face additional charges.
