WOONSOCKET, RI – Police were called to a collision involving a train and a vehicle in Woonsocket on Sunday night, WJAR reported.
The accident happened shortly after 9 p.m. at the River Street crossing. Investigators learned that a Blackstone woman driving a Honda intended to turn onto Verry Street but mistakenly turned onto the railroad tracks, where her vehicle became disabled.
Police said the conductors of a 4,200-foot train were able to stop the train quickly due to its slow speed, but not before hitting the Honda. The driver was able to get out of the car before the train approached.
The crossing was shut down for hours while the crash was being cleared and investigated.
