Suspect in DUI Crash That Hurt Officer; More Charges

Sixty-four-year-old Warwick in Kent County, Rhode Island resident Thomas Horne, who had been charged with driving under the influence in relation to hitting a police officer, who was conducting traffic, with his vehicle on Warwick Avenue on Sunday, July 10 was charged with new offenses, namely, driving under the influence – resulting in serious bodily injury, driving to endanger – resulting in personal injury, and refusal to submit to a chemical test on Tuesday, July 12.

Police authorities said Horne’s charges were upgraded due to the sensitivity of the impact to the police officer who was involved in the car accident.

Police investigators said Horne was making a left turn from Sandy Lane onto Warwick Avenue when he cut the turn short, causing him to drive directly into the path of the police officer conducting traffic.

The police officer was taken to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence for the treatment of his critical injuries and was released on Monday, July 11.
