Female passenger, 20, killed in Richmond rear-end wreck with semi

RICHMOND, RI – A 20-year-old woman was fatally injured Monday while traveling as a passenger in a Subaru that struck the back of a semi-truck and then was hit by another vehicle on I-95.

WPRI said this multi-vehicle collision happened before 5 a.m. near Exit 9. Authorities revealed the driver of the 18-wheeler was traveling north in the center lane. At one point, the Subaru driver struck the back of the truck while merging into the left lane. Shortly after, the Subaru collided with the third vehicle.

A police officer in training with the Coventry Police Department was struck and injured by debris from this collision, but no other information about his condition was provided.

The Subaru and tractor-trailer drivers were unharmed. However, the three other occupants of the Subaru were hospitalized for serious injuries. The 20-year-old woman, who was identified as Karen Paredes-Ramos, a Providence woman, died from laceration injuries at the scene.

Authorities have not released additional details surrounding this crash, but an investigation has been launched.
