Driver hospitalized, dog dead after vehicle plunges into Gull Cove

PORTSMOUTH, RI – A driver was hospitalized, and their dog died on Tuesday after their car veered into the water at Gull Cove in Portsmouth, reports NBC 10 News.

Officials said emergency teams responded to the area after receiving reports that a vehicle had become submerged.

Fire crews and environmental police reached the area and found the car under the surface. They also located the driver near the shore.

Responders got the driver out of the area. Medics then brought that person to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor hypothermia.

Authorities said the driver could not rescue a dog from inside the car. The dog reportedly died after the vehicle sank.

A Rhode Island State Police dive crew later helped responders pull the vehicle from the water. Officials have not clarified what might have led to the incident.
