2 killed in head-on collision in Cumberland 

CUMBERLAND, RI – Two lives were claimed as a result of a head-on collision in Cumberland that occurred on Interstate 295 last Thursday, August 20. 

State police told WJAR10News that they believe a 29-year-old man, driving a Hyundai Ionic, was traveling at a high rate of speed in the southbound lane and lost control of his vehicle, causing him to cross over the median and crash head-on into a northbound pickup truck. 

Additional information from Boston.Com reveals that the Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck then overturned and sideswiped an Acura ADX, leaving it with minor damage.

Boston.Com said that the driver of the Hyundai, 29-year-old Joel Costa, from Boston’s Hyde Park, died at the scene, while the pickup truck driver, 44-year-old Jonathan Welch, from  Norton, Massachusetts, later died at a hospital. 

Police confirmed that it was Costa’s speeding that ultimately led to the crash.
