Driver and student hospitalized after Mashpee school bus crash

MASHPEE, MA – A school bus driver and a student were taken to local hospitals Monday morning after their bus hit a tree in Mashpee, reports the Cape Cod Times.

Police were called to the scene of the wreck near Old Barnstable Road and Leather Leaf Lane at about 8:40 a.m.

School officials say the M11 bus was carrying about 26 children, ranging from six to 12 years old, at the time. The children were on their way to Kenneth C. Coombs School and Quashnet Intermediate School.

Authorities report that the driver suffered a sudden health emergency just before the crash. Investigators say that issue likely caused the driver to lose control and strike a nearby tree.

First responders treated the driver at the scene before transporting her to Cape Cod Hospital.

Officials initially reported no injuries among the children on the bus. However, one student was later taken to Falmouth Hospital for observation.

We do not know the current condition of either the driver or the child.
