Several injured, 1 charged in solo crash on Rte 24 in Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH, RI – Four people were hospitalized Saturday night following a single-vehicle collision along the highway in Newport County, reports abc 6 Providence Now.

Just before 9:45 p.m., emergency crews responded to a rollover accident on Route 24, or the Fall River Expressway, near Cedar Island in Portsmouth.

Police say that an 18-year-old driver lost control of his Toyota Camry and hit a construction traffic message board along the roadway, causing the vehicle to overturn.

Medics worked to extricate the driver and a juvenile passenger from the vehicle. The juvenile went to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver was also hospitalized with unspecified injuries.

Two additional juvenile passengers were able to exit the vehicle without assistance. They received treatment at an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities reported finding both alcohol and marijuana in the car.

The driver, since identified as Michael A. Montanez Verdejo, faces charges that include driving to endanger, driving with alcohol, speeding, and driving with a suspended license.

A full investigation is underway.
